My switch from Business Administration to Communication media and film.
I never thought I’d switch majors.
When I started university, I was enrolled in Business Administration. And I did that because it felt like the safest option to do. Because business administration is known to be the kind of program that people nod approvingly at when you tell them. But the more I got into it, the more I realized it wasn’t for me. I was sitting through lectures about economics and STEN (Introduction to Business), but I never felt interested in it, and I just kept on feeling out of place when it came to the major.
Meanwhile, I was spending all my free time on creative stuff.
I loved the idea of talking, and I am the type of person that likes to interact and talk to random people to see their side in life. I also enjoyed writing short scripts and thinking way too hard about the films I watched. I was already doing things that a normal Communications, Media, and Film student usually did, but I just wasn’t getting any credit for it. That’s when it hit me: maybe I was in the wrong major.
So, I switched.
And honestly, moving into Communication, Media, and Film felt like a breath of fresh air. Now I’m learning how media shapes people, how to tell better stories, and how to turn creative ideas into real projects. It’s challenging in a different way, and it’s just way more open ended and more expressive, so that’s exactly what I needed.
Was it scary to change direction? Absolutely.
There’s always that voice in your head asking if it was the right thing to do. But once I started media courses, I knew I was where I belonged. I still use some of the skills I learned in business, like how to structure presentations and work in a team, but now I care about what I’m creating.
Here’s what I’ve learned.
If you’re feeling pressure or stuck in your major, it’s always okay to go and figure out and explore something new. You’re not locked into one path just because you started on it. University is a chance to figure things out, and that includes changing your mind.
